Trial of Joseph Hughes for the murder of Michael Clarke on board the schooner Dove, 1756 Oct. 20.

Transcript of the trial, which took place in Providence. Hughes, the captain of the ship returning to Newport, was accused of beating Clarke to death. Witnesses also testified that Clarke was in ill health. Hughes was convicted, but the court suspended his execution to allow an appeal for pardon. Transcript made by Ezekiel Goldthwaite for the court in Boston.
